- Description: Offers HUD-approved housing counseling programs at no cost to the general public. GSUL Housing Office offers counseling assistance in the following areas: Pre-Purchase Housing Counseling: preparing people to become homeowners through financial coaching (budget, credit), guidance on the process of buying a home including the lending and escrow process, including searching for any down payment assistance plans clients may qualify for. Foreclosure Prevention Counseling: provide one-on-one counseling to homeowners who have fallen behind (or are about to fall behind) in their mortgage payments. Rental Counseling: provide counseling and guidance on the steps and financial guidelines for renting a home or an apartment, or are having difficulty with their current rental arrangement (eviction or pre-eviction). Homelessness Counseling: provide counseling and resources to those seeking temporary/transitional housing.The Housing Counseling Program does not provide housing or any direct financial assistance for utilities, rent, or mortgage.
